HELLO BACK AT LAST (IF ANYONE HAS NOTICED)
Its been a long few months of sickness, pneumonia and two serious bouts of colds. Difficult to live with that and treatment at the same time. But I’v started again with my soaps today. I attempted a baby soap today a recipe of the Soap Queen.
PLEASE WEAR SAFETY CLOTHES (see earlier posts for safety procedure) LYE IS WONDERFUL BUT ALSO DANGEROUS IF NOT HANDLED PROPERLY.
Today my stick blender decided midway through trace to give up on me. I had to resort to using the food mixer. The recipe I used is as follows:
Buttermilk Bastille Baby Bar Recipe:
In all honesty I’m a bit unsure of whether I like the colour of the Carrot Baby Food. I think I would leave it out next time. But sometimes its best to follow the recipe anyway to make sure that you get things right.
MY DIRECTIONS (look out!)
I did not bother heating the Olive Oil and instead added the warm melted coconut oil. I decided to use the double pot boiler rather than the crockpot. Less washing up
ADD TO OLIVE OIL AND START BLENDING (AFTER YOUR PREPARE OTHER INGREDIENTS (SEE BELOW)
I FROZE MY BUTTER MILK IN ICE-CUBE TUBES THE NIGHT BEFORE. PUT ICE INSIDE A BOWL AND PLACE THE BUTTERMILK JUG ON TOP. THIS KEEPS THE MILK FROM MELTING. SPOON IN THE LYE SLOWLY AND GENTLY STIRRING AND ADDING AT INTERVALS. THIS TECHNIQUE AND THE ICE IN THE BOWL STOPS THE BUTTERMILK FROM BURNING. I RECOMMEND USING A FAN IF YOU ARE IN A SMALL KITCHEN LIKE MINE. THE FUMES FROM LYE ARE STRONG.
PREPARE THE BABY FOOD. I PURCHASED A TINY JAR OF CARROT AND WATER FROM THE PHARMACY
THE PROBLEM I HAD AFTER I ADDED THE BABY FOOD TO THE LYE WAS THE COLOUR. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TELL IF THE LYE HAD CLEARED PROPERLY OR SMALL WHITE TRACES I COULD SEE WERE FROM THE CARROT. I’D PROBABLY OMIT BF IN THIS RECIPE. BUT I LIKED THE PALE ORANGE LOOK LATER
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD TRACE. MINE TOOK A WHILE BECAUSE MY HAND BLENDER OVERHEATED AND DIED
GET YOUR MOLDS READY. I USED SMALLER ONES. I AM NEW TO THIS SO I SHOULD PROBABLY HAVE USED A LARGER MOLD FOR THE SAKE OF TIDINESS. BIT OF A MESS HERE.
DONT FORGET TO SPRAY ALCOHOL. WILL SEE HOW THESE LOOK TOMORROW. I WILL PROBABLY LEAVE THEM INSIDE THE MOLDS FOR A FEW MORE DAYS AS BUTTERMILK MAY TAKE LONGER.
